I work in the Environmental Safety Dept for Unilever. You may not have heard of the company but I am sure you will know many of the brand names for the products we make. For example, Persil, Cif, Dove, Lynx, Magnum and Marmite (love it or hate it!). My job is to make sure the products we make and sell are safe for the environment, after all most of them end up going straight down the drain!

My Typical Day:
I usually get up about 7am although I admit I hate early mornings! I start work at around 9am. My job is entirely desk based now which means I can work from home if I want to. However I like being around other people so I usually go into the office at least 2 days a week. I am involved in lots of different projects so tend to have lots of meetings to discuss how they are going and what we want to do next. I go home around 5pm.

Work History:
I started at Unilever straight from University after completing my degree. At first I worked as a research assistant making and testing shower gels. After a couple of years, I moved to the Environmental Safety team were I stayed in the lab conducting tests to determine the toxicity and biodegradability of chemicals in the environment. Around this time I decided that I wanted to get some extra qualifications and decided to go back to studying on a part-time basis. I completed my MSc qualification over two years, attending evening classes once a week after work. These days I have more a desk based role although I do still miss getting my hands dirty in the lab!
-
Current Job:
I am currently and environmental safety scientist. I used to work in a lab conducting experiments but now I have a desk based role. I am involved in lots of different projects which are all related to understanding what happens to chemicals when they get into the environment. I also use a lot of different computer models to help predict what might happen. Although I don’t do any practical work myself I am still involved in helping design experiments and understanding the results
