Question: Regarding your apprenticeship, can you still become a scientist by doing an intermediate apprenticeship or anything below a degree entitled apprenticeship?

Jack Hughes answered on 6 Feb 2024:
Yes, scientists come at all different levels! Apprenticeships provide hands-on experience in scientific settings, helping you gain practical skills. You can continue learning through additional training and certifications, progressing to higher-level roles in your field. A degree or further education is optional, but apprenticeships offer a viable pathway to a career in science without a degree.

Kip Heath answered on 7 Feb 2024:
Like Jack says – you are scientist when working as one, whatever the qualification. (One of the things I stop new people in the lab saying is ‘I’m not a scientist yet.’ You are a scientist, you’re just learning to become a better one – and we should all do that.)
In the NHS we offer healthcare science apprenticeships that are equivalent to GCSEs, A Levels, degrees and masters degrees. Hopefully one day PhDs as well.

I entered industry as an apprentice and qualified to degree level through day release. It takes longer but can be done.

Of course you can. I started as an apprentice straight from completing my A-Levels at school. I then completed an NVQ L3, BTEC National, HNC, HND, Degree and finally a Masters Degree. All paid for by my employers over the years and completed on day / block release.
It took roughly 6 years to go from NVQ L3 to Degree on day release and then I completed my MSc over a 2 year period later on block release.
As you can see it takes longer, but you are also developing the real world experience and soft skills at the same time which puts you ahead of you peers who decided to go to Uni instead in my opinion.
