Erin Pallott answered on 27 Feb 2024:
I did maths, English lit, English language, biology, chemistry, physics, geography and French. I moved schools late into my GCSEs, so I ended up dropping a couple of other subjects as the exam boards were too different for me to catch up!

I didn’t do GCSEs as I went to school in Scotland. I did 8 O Grades in fourth year at high school (English, French, Latin, History, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, and Arithmetic). I then did 5 Highers (Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English and History) and crashed an Engineering Drawing O Grade all in my fifth year at High School. I left school at the end of that years to go to university.

Michael Schubert answered on 29 Feb 2024:
I went to high school in Canada, so we didn’t do GCSEs. Instead, I did the IB Diploma programme, which meant I had to study English, a second language (mine was French), maths, history (with geography), and two sciences. I added on the third science, so I did biology, chemistry and physics. I also did music and drama, but only as electives, so they weren’t part of my IB programme.

So I think things have changed quite a bit from when I went to school. However I can remember back then I thought it was important to chose a rounded set of subjects, as far as I could.
For us English Language, English Literature and Maths were compulsory subjects. In addition we got to choose five additional subjects. I choose Physics, Biology, History, French and Design and Technology.
They have all been of much use to me in later life but I have to say that the most useful of all has been Maths

Sandra Robertson answered on 15 Mar 2024:
When I chose my subjects at high school – Compulsory for everyone were English & Maths, with Arithmetic as a separate exam, I had to chose one language which was French, I couldn’t choose all 3 sciences and could only choose 2 so went for Chemistry and Physics – I did Higher Biology in 6th Year when I had more space in my timetable. And I couldn’t choose Geography and Art, as they were in the same choice column so went for Art.

I didn’t do GCSEs as I completed high school in Australia. But for my final year I studied human biology, information systems, English, art, mathematics and geography. We had to pick certain subjects depending on what university course we wanted to get into as well.

I did Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Maths, English Lit, English Language, French, Latin, CDT (Craft, Design and Technology) and RE (religious education). GCSEs can give you a good base in everything and to give you an idea of what you think you might be interested in. I still use my woodwork skills in CDT for DIY around my house!
