Well, although I don’t programme very much in my current position, I would say that I enjoy creating something that saves someone time in their work. It is great to produce something useful.

Solving problems! In my job I analyse health data to answer questions such as ”what causes diabetes”, ”how many people get diabetes every year”, and help decide how we can improve health for people all over the world.

Programming is fun! It feels like I’m solving puzzles a lot of the time. I work on websites. The design team shows us a design and we have to figure out a way to make it appear on the screen and work the way they want it to by writing lines of text. When I think about it, it’s kind of crazy we can even do that in the first place.
There’s always something new to learn too. So, as you code more, you learn more and try to create more complicated things. It’s like levelling up in a game!

Good question….being stuck on something, getting frustrated and walking away to rest and suddenly getting a brainwave while doing random unrelated things.

Gabrielle Baumberg answered on 18 Jul 2024:
It might be a strange one, but I really like working on the same code over and over again until I can make it as simple and efficient as possible. It is really satisfying to find a neat solution to something that started out very complex. This does mean that I can spend a couple hours reducing things to one line of code!
