I enjoy photography but don’t always have willing subjects. Unfortunately for my dog, that means he has to be my subject. I must have thousands of photos of him by now! I use a digital camera but I’ve also recently started using old film cameras and developing them at home. I very much enjoy watching films. I’m a big fan of sci-fi and will argue with anyone that the 80s-90s was the best era!

My Work:
I am a research scientist in an NHS hospital in London. I specialise in Microbiology where I work with bacteria, fungi and viruses. Most of my research is aimed at reducing transmission of diseases in the environment. I also work in clinical trials related to Microbiology.

My Typical Day:
I get to work just after 9am. I don’t spend as much time in the lab now as I used to so a lot of my time is spent organising the other wonderful scientists in my lab. Lunch is at 1pm which we all try to take together. The work day is usually over at 17:30 but if it’s been a busy day or we have long experiments we could leave a lot later.

I live 45 mins from work so I normally get the train at 08:30. Travelling is the time I use to wake up in the morning or wind down in the evenings so I use that time to read. I love reading fiction and I get through a lot of books reading 1.5 hours a day! When I arrive, the first thing I do is to sit at my desk with a coffee and catch up on e-mails. I don’t do as much work in the lab as I used to so a lot of my morning is spent organising the work among the team in my lab. Mornings are generally when we do most of the experiments.
Most of us take lunch at 13:00 and we always try and take lunch together so we can socialise and talk about other things (though we sometimes end up talking about work anyway! If the experiments are over by lunch, afternoons are generally spent doing research or going through our data at our desks.
The work day ends at 17:30 though we all come in and leave at slightly different times. Sometimes we have long experiments and need to stay a little later but it’s a very relaxed atmosphere. Just like hanging out with friends.
