About Me:
I live in Cambridge. I play field hockey all the time (goalkeeper, nickname semi-permeable Brick Wall π§±), I play bluesy guitar songs and piano. I love the sea, clouds, nature – I’m often blown away by the complexities of life!

I was born & raised in Nottingham. For my GCSEs I did Geography, Music, French, alongside the usual ones. At A level I did chemistry, maths, biology. I did french for the first year & I think it’s a shame I didn’t keep this up – I thought I needed to do all the sciences and specialise, but I don’t think this is the case!
I’ve moved around a little bit in my 27 years, I’ve lived in Manchester and Liverpool for my Bachelors degree at uni. I now live and work in Cambridge at the Sanger Institute, which does research into genomes.

My Work:
At the Sanger Institute I work as a Management Trainee. This is a Graduate scheme (ie for people who have recently finished university) and I have been in 4 very different teams over the last 2 years. It’s a really eye-opening experience! I get to learn about how teams work together; I can be there to help teams work together more effectively, to improve the way we do our science and hopefully get more done.

I don’t work in labs at all. Although I love science, the lab environment just wasn’t for me – but this job is great because I get to be around amazing science all the time, and my work is really important for improving the science we do.

My Typical Day:
I wake up and read a book for a bit to wake my brain up. I get to work at 9am and usually have morning meetings with teams I work with, and get on top of emails and jobs that I need to do for the day. I like to go for a wander around where I work and listen to music before lunch, and my afternoon is all about managing my time effectively to make sure everything that needs doing gets done to a high standard.

What I'd do with the prize money:
Piano & sheet music, maybe some things that help me to record any tunes that I make!

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
talkative, reflective, teammate
What did you want to be after you left school?
Doctor - quickly changed my mind after visiting medical schools! Not for me, but I held onto my love for healthcare.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Occasionally; never ended up in isolation but there were a fair few detentions for bad behaviour.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
Musician. I love listening to music, making music, and seeing the reaction that music elicits in others!
Who is your favourite singer or band?
John Fahey! His music changed my life and I've been trying to learn his songs, they sometimes feel like they're from a hundred years ago and sometimes from another planet.
What's your favourite food?
Absolutely love a cheese toastie. I'm still perfecting the recipe though - type of bread, cheese, acoutrements... lots to think about.
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
Flight or teleportation, can't decide which. I wish I could play the music that I hear in my head. And I wish I could never be tired or lazy!
Tell us a joke.
The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
