Question: Why is non-renewable petrol so expensive?

John Turner answered on 15 Mar 2024:
Fuel prices are high cost in the UK mostly due to the tax that the government puts on it. Approximately half the cost of your fuel is in the form of tax/duty paid to the government. The other half is the actual cost of the material and transportation costs. I got my data here if you want to see the full breakdown (https://www.lookers.co.uk/blog/how-is-the-cost-of-fuel-broken-down). Having a high cost is not necessarily a bad thing, as this means we focus on cars that are fuel efficient. In places like the USA, they have lower fuel prices and generally have significantly larger cars that make more CO2.

Unfortunately, at the moment renewable petrol is even more expensive than the non-renewable petrol which comes from crude oil (a ‘fossil fuel’). This is because crude oil can be pulled out of the ground quite easily, and there is still enough of it to go around, whereas new fuels need to be made from crops which use a lot of land and water, or using electricity which is hard to get enough of from wind, solar and nuclear sources.

The biggest part of the cost of petrol is tax. The governement put high tax on petrol to encourage people not to use cars, but often there aren’t good alternatives. That depends on where you live and whether there is good public transport.
