Question: why do turtles need their shells

Hi Aoibhin!
Turtles are pretty interesting creatures. I’m not an expert, but I know their shell is helpful for protection against predators and camouflages them in their environment. It can also help them swim faster and makes digging/burrowing into the ground easier.

Turtles need their shells as they are part of their skeleton! Unlike in cartoons, turtles cannot remove their shells. The shell is made from modified bones of the rib cage and pelvis. It helps protect their soft bodies from most predators.
There is an amazing Japanese artist called Satoshi Kawasaki who draws people as though they have the skeletons of animals, to help us understand the differences and similarities. I love the bat one, as they basically fly with the power of jazz hands!
