About Me:
Hi, I’m Rachael! I’m a chemist and I work as a Lecturer at University College London. When I’m not at work, I love swimming, baking, and spending time outside!

I live near Watford, near the Harry Potter Studios which I love visiting! β‘ I love going swimming and taking long walks to see what plants and birds I can find – water birds are my favourite! When I’m at home you’ll find me on the sofa watching Star Trek on Netflix and doing a jigsaw, or looking after my houseplants. I’m never happier than when I have a cup of tea and a biscuit, preferably a chocolate one!

My Work:
I am a Lecturer at University College London, and my job involves doing research and teaching university students. My research is on finding new medicines to treat illnesses and disease.

I am a chemist (I studied chemistry at university) but I now work in the School of Pharmacy at UCL where I help to teach students who want to be pharmacists. I teach lots of different things, mostly about organic chemistry and biochemistry.
I lead a team of researchers working on a range of different projects to find new medicines to treat infections and neurodegenerative conditions. The researchers in my team are mostly PhD students who spend 3 years with me doing research, and will get their PhD at the end! I also have people in my team who are studying for their masters degree, and are usually only with me for 6 months. Lots of the medicines we make are inspired by compounds found naturally in the environment. We are really interested in compounds that microbes produce to fight each other, because they could maybe be used as antibiotics!
-
My Typical Day:
I’m a morning person so I prefer to wake up early and get to work for 7.30am! I usually spend my work day doing a mix of teaching undergraduate students and meeting my research team to help them with their projects. Unfortunately I don’t get time to do much lab work myself anymore! I usually go home at around 6pm.

I prefer to work in the office so I travel into UCL every day, although many of my colleagues often work from home. When I arrive at work I have breakfast and a cup of tea at my desk while I check my emails.
Usually I have a few meetings in the day with students in my research team, where we discuss their progress and I help them plan the next steps of their projects. Sometimes I get to go into the lab if I need to show someone how to use some equipment or teach them a new technique! Sometimes I have teaching, which can be to 200 students in a lecture theatre, or 50 students in a workshop or lab class. The rest of the time I spend planning new research projects, applying for money to do our research, or writing up our results to share with other scientists.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to use the money to work with local schools. I want to show more young people the amazing things we can do with chemistry to help us discover and develop new medicines.
-
Education:
I did my GCSEs at Vale of Catmose College in Rutland, followed by A Levels at Oakham School. I went to the University of Manchester for my undergraduate degree, and then UCL for my PhD.
-
Qualifications:
I got 11 GCSEs (5 A*, 4 A and 1 B), including double science as my school didn’t offer triple science! I took an environmental science GCSE when I was in year 9 too and got a B.
I did 4 A-Levels (biology, chemistry, physics and maths – I am only good at science!) and got 4 As.
My undergraduate degree was MChem Medicinal Chemistry. I did a 4 year degree and got a masters in chemistry at the end, I don’t have a bachelors degree. This is called an integrated masters and is really common in science and engineering subjects now. I was awarded a 1st class degree.
I was awarded my PhD in organic chemistry in 2018. The title of my thesis was “Synthesis and Conformational Studies of the Lipid II-Binding Rings of Nisin and Mutacin I”
-
Work History:
During my undergraduate degree I worked as a waitress in a cafe for a coupe of years, and during the summer between my 3rd-4th year I did a summer project in a research lab at the university.
During my PhD I did lots of teaching, in workshops and lab classes, which is a good way to earn extra money as a PhD student!
After my PhD I worked as a postdoctoral research fellow for 2 years on a project I designed. As part of my research I got to travel to Sweden and Northern Ireland to work in other universities.
-
Current Job:
My job title is ‘Lecturer in Drug Discovery’ at the UCL School of Pharmacy.
