I always enjoyed science, especially physics, at school and then my mum had cancer just as I was leaving school. I watched her getting all her treatment and decided I wanted a career which helped people with cancer. I didn’t want to be a doctor as the hours are terrible and I knew I wanted to do physics, so Medical Physics was the obvious choice.
I originally didn’t but I was always drawn to solving problems and doing experiments. As I studied further, I learnt I like physics a lot (even though it was difficult for me at school!) and became a laser scientist 😀
I enjoyed science at primary school and found I was good at it, especially chemistry and physics, at high school. That pointed me in the direction of doing a university degree in chemistry. Once on that pathway other life experiences led me to becoming an academic.
I started out as a mathematician but moved into marine science as I am really passionate about the marine environment and wanted to actively work on protecting it.
