I spend some of my time building electronics – we make sensors called electromagnetic acoustic transducers, which we make by winding wire into differently shaped coils and adding magnets. They are essentially speakers like in your phone or radio, but work by using something metal like a railway track as part of the speaker. We use them to make really high frequency sound waves in the metal (ultrasound), and then look at how it travels through the metal – because if there are any cracks or corrosion, we can see it changing how the sound travels.
Outside of work I love making things too – mostly sewing clothes or making jewellery.

When i was younger my favourite thing to build was Lego. I had a 10 litre tub of bricks which we kept long after I was ‘too old’ to play with it. It was great fun being able to bring it back out for my nephews and nieces when they became old enough to enjoy it. At work I now use the ‘spaghetti tower challenge’ using uncooked spaghetti, string, tape and a marshmallow – to see who can build the tallest tower. This can get really competitive!

Well in my spare time I can really enjoy cooking delicious dishes for myself and other to enjoy.
I believe that cooking involves a huge amount of science but it is also very creative. Like music it is one of the areas where Science and the Arts come together. -

My favourite thing to build when the sun is out is things for my garden like planters or bird houses. I also build more arty things using online programs for friends such as wedding invitations and menus.
Inside the house I’m currently refitting my kitchen (hard work but totally worth it) and managing to save £££ doing it myself. -

I really enjoy working as an aerospace engineer – where I am part of a big team (usually an international team), and we design and build aircraft. Its a great feeling to see ‘your’ aircraft fly, or sometimes actually fly on board.

I love designing and building lots of things. I really enjoy making my screen-printed solar panels and many other types of printed electronics. However, my favourite thing is my minature energy generating playground kit. I designed and made these to take into schools so that pupils could get to put together these minature swings, seesaws and carousels which make energy to light up a bulb every time the minature lego person plays on them. Those were really fun to come up with and were produced on my 3d printer at home, using recycled plastic filament. These kits have toured wales and have been assembled by over 650 students so far.

I like building robots (e.g. Lego Mindstorms) and then programming them to do things, even if it is just doing a patrol around my house plants.

I dont build anything as such but I love cooking which is similar to creating something new. I love to experiment to find the right blend of spices that would make an excellent dish 🙂
