• Question: Sorry for the deep question, but what do you think about the conspiracy theory that if scientists were to find a cure for cancer, only the rich would be allowed to access it?

It’s not really a conspiracy theory – this already happens with a lot of medications all over the world. For example, in the US people die of diabetes because the company that makes insulin raised the price above what a lot of people can afford. Similarly a lot of people in poorer countries can’t afford aids medication or covid vaccines.

The only bit that isn’t true is the idea that there is a single cure for cancer. Cancer is lots of different diseases, depending on where in your body the cancer starts and what caused it, so it needs lots of different cures. Some cancers we can cure easily already, some we can sometimes treat and delay progression, some we can’t do anything about yet. And some cancers we don’t need to treat at all- for example, many men will die with prostate cancer; but if you are 90 and you get prostate cancer it’s not going to get bad enough to kill you for another 15-20 years, and you’ll be dead of something else first.

While this would not surprise me in the slightest, i have to have hope that as a society and as human beings if this was found to be happening that we would not tolerate this and we would do something about it.

They are so many different cancer’s that affect various parts of the body, some are easily treated if caught early, others are not. Everybody is different as cancer treatment works better on some than others based on age, pre-existing health condition etc. Having said that, there are lots of research into cure for cancers and some medicines in clinical trials are used for people who have run out of treatment options. Currently, there is no single cure for cancer but in countries with private insurance people die if treatment is not commenced early or cannot afford treatment plans.
