I’ve been into gaming since I was a kid, most of my first experiences were old PC and Playstation 2 games. For me I struggle to sit and do nothing so I gaming is a good outlet for me in the evenings.
I grew up playing board games with my family, then with friends. Board games allow spending time with friends and family in a memorable and enjoyable way.
Since I was a kid in the early 90’s I’ve always played computer games, I can’t remember not ever playing them. From old machines like the Amiga/Commodore 64, to the Master System and the N64, and endless summers playing Pokemon on the Gameboy, to the Playstation 1 and 2, and then eventually to the PC. It’s still something I do to relax, and get away from the real world.
Oh…old guy here. ZX Spectrum. Manic Miner. Elite. Being amazed when the Spectrum 128K (yes – K – not M!) came along. Atari ST. Carrier Command. Gauntlet. PC. Doom. Quake. Civilisation.
I’ll stop speaking in bullet points (!) but I got into gaming because I was amazed what computers could do. I used to code my own very simple games…but no more. I’m happy now that there are a lot of indie games written by small studios that explore interesting ideas and themes: like ‘Papers Please’, ‘What Remains of Edith Finch’, and ‘Firewatch’ – oh, yes, and one game that still haunts me ‘Return of the Obra Dinn’. Amazing narratives and ideas.
It’s incredible how creative people can be – and as a neuroscientist, I love to think about how the authors have coded and made these. But equally – give me a good FPS and I’m happy as larry…!
Started playing board games with my family when I was a kid before we tried computer games together. Other kids my age then had better gaming setup than me so I stuck with games that were low on processing power. Kept it as a hobby when I can growing up and actually it was through my scientist job that I got to buy myself a gaming laptop! Now processing power isn’t an issue much (it’s now a storage/memory issue now but I can play way more games now!) 🙂
