  We do use different ‘strains’ of mice for different diseases. For example a researcher who works on breast cancer might use a mouse that’s been genetically modified to have a mutation which causes breast cancer – then they can treat it with drugs to see what works.

  I had to work with a strain of mouse from Japan where I could delete their mast cells (part of the immune system) after a series of protein injections, so I could then study how those cells influenced rheumatoid arthritis.
