I used lots of computers and electronic instruments. But the most impressive things I use are my ultrahigh vacuum systems. These are large stainless steel systems with lots of flanges, bolt, pumps, valves to things to allow my to recreate the environment of space in my laboratories.

I use computers a lot – almost all of the time! Other than that, it’s mainly microscopes, pipettes, and a couple of different analysers which can count all of the different types of cells in your blood. It uses a fluorescent dye to stain the cells and uses lasers to count them, which I think is pretty cool!

99 % of the time my computer but in the lab I use a pipette the most – this lets me measure incredibly accurate amounts of material, which is essential for extracting DNA, setting up growth conditions for microbes and handling any chemicals.

I mainly use my computer and run simulations on a Mini Super Computer. I also use a Wind Tunnel and various sensors (Pressure Scanners, Hot Wire and seldom lasers). I also use 3D Printers and other prototyping equipment for models and Raspberry Pis for integrating sensors.

I use my laptop as main instrument but what I mostly use tools in the cloud .
Clouds is a network of servers that are connected to the internet and are used to store, process, and manage data .

For my role I would regularly use different types of mixing equipment for solutions. Magnetic stirrers and mixing stir bars, larger overhead mixers like oversized food mixers, and roller mixers for much smaller solutions which need to mix more gently.
I use pipettes to make additions, and for testing the products once made, these include multi-channel pipettes where there are 8 tips at one time, and multipipettes which allow me to make the same volume of addition multiple times.
I regularly us pH meters to make the solutions to set pH concentrations, and timers to control the mixing conditions of the solution so the chemicals added are fully dissolved.

We use lots of different equipment. One of the ones I use most days is an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine. This measures the electrics in the heart, so we can see how the heart is beating.

As a nuclear safety engineer, my main peice of equipment is a computer. I use word for writing documents, excel for doing maths, and some specialist analysis software, including Risk Spectrum and Fault Tree Plus. Appart from that, I use a phone or video conference to talk to people. There can be a lot of talking.

Nowadays, I mostly use computers and communication equipment (like microphones and cameras). When I did more work in the laboratory, though, I used a lot of equipment. Some examples are:
      – a thermocycler (which runs chemical reactions to help me detect and examine DNA)
      – an analytical ultracentrifuge (which measures changes in tiny particles dissolved in liquids)
      – a cryo-electron microscope (which lets me freeze DNA and look at the shapes it makes)

My favourite task is microtomy. A microtome is piece of equipment that helps cuts really thin sections of human tissue, the sections are 4um. This is thinner than your hair!!!!! I’d work on a microtome every day, some days I’d be on one all day and other days it would just be for a few hours, it all depends on the workload and how many biopsies we’d have turn up to the lab.
