Amber Villegas - Williamson answered on 7 Jun 2024:
If I could restart from the beginning I would choose the same career but I would set myself up to be better from early on. I think I would have done an apprenticeship so that I could gain experience, degree and earn money at the same time. I would definitely have joined the professional body sooner (I’m with The IET) and I would have pushed to have a mentor as early as possible. I would also get involved as a volunteer sooner and attend networking events as the people you know in your sector are your future colleagues and even friends. Knowing people is really helpful because as you get experience and as job positions become available if people know you they will just call so you don’t even need to apply for jobs (you still have to interview) but it takes the hunting out of job searches.

If I were to restart, I’d still aim to be a pilot. If that didn’t work out I might then take an engineering degree (rather than the physics degree that I actually took). The rest of my careers after that just evolved as I went along – new opportunities pop up the more experience you gain (and most people with experience are not in the job they aimed for when they left school).
