Because I choose my own jobs and working hours, I can take holidays whenever I like (as long as I’m not too busy to make time!). I like to take holidays in the middle of the week or during school, because other people don’t have time off then, so the places I like to go are less crowded. I like to do nature holidays like camping or visiting the mountains, so it’s nicest when it’s not crowded!
Working in a university, unfortunately the term dates and half term breaks don’t always match up exactly with schools, which can make it difficult if you have small kids. One good thing nowadays is that most universities usually have flexible working hours, so you can make sure you are not lecturing at a time when you need to do the school run.
Now my children are all nearly grown up (only one still doing A-Levels), so it is not so hard to juggle. Still, it’s a bit annoying that this year our Spring term runs for one more week after Easter, when the schools have already broken up.
