Question: if you had to have a different job other than being a scientist what would it be?

I really enjoy writing. I’d like to be a science writer where I help communicate scientific findings to different groups of people. I especially love writing about science for the general public.
I’m a bit clumsy in the lab, so I think I might be better suited to desk life!

I would make things. I’m not sure what – maybe I’d design houses, maybe I’d make clothes, maybe I’d be a jeweller…

if i couldnt be a scientist i would like to be an animal pathologist. we have one that does this for us on the farm and its amazing to see all the causes of illness and disease in animals that have sadly passed away and what we can then do to make sure it does not happen again to other still living animals.
when i was younger i wanted to be a vet but i love animals far too much and i didnt think i would be able to put sick animals to sleep so i decided it wasnt for me. if id realised you could help other animals from learning from how and why they have died. i do think id have done that.

I often joke with friends and colleagues that if I lose interest in science then I’ll go and stack shelves in Tesco. Realistically, if I wasn’t a scientist then I’d probably be a teacher. I am in a sense as I teach parts of chemistry to undergraduate students.

I am also a physiotherapist, I have been an aircraft technician (fixing jet engines).

I really like writing and editing, and I’m pretty good at organising and managing, so I think I’d like to try being a television script editor.

I really liked the idea of being a science teacher – I basically do this as a lecturer but for people that have left school. I think I would still think of that as a possible alternate career, but my sister is a teacher so I know that it is a very tough job!

If I wasn’t a scientist I think I would like to work in an art gallery or a museum. I’d love to learn how to restore old pictures or pieces so they can be displayed and enjoyed.

I really love photography, so if I could make a living from that I’d be happy. But being realistic, if I was to give up being a scientist, it would be to do some form of communication and outreach with the public.
