Question: Can we survive without necks

Zoe Vance answered on 7 Feb 2024:
You might get a better answer from someone more specialised in how bodies are put together, but I can’t think of a good reason why not having a neck would be lethal (as long as everything is still connected right). You can be born with some bones fused together that basically means you have no neck, so you don’t die without one – but it’s probably useful to have all the same! Probably quite important for supporting your head (human brains are quite heavy) and allowing you to move your head around. So it probably isn’t essential for surviving but I don’t think we’ll ever see humans evolving away from having one!

No we can’t. Neck helps us to move our head around and if we can’t do that we cannot see the dangers that are present besides us for eg while crossing the road for instance. So we do need our neck 😀

There is a surprising amount going on in your neck, so the technical answer is no! Your neck houses your oesophagus (food tube), trachea (windpipe), thyroid and parathyroid (controls a lot of the chemical reactions in your body), some major blood vessels and muscles to let you move your head.
