Nik Robinson answered on 8 Mar 2024:
Abundant clean energy would be liofe and world changing.
Physicists have been working on nuclear fussion reactors for years, a breakthrough in this science could power nations without the nead for fossil fuels fo renergy.

Martin McCoustra answered on 8 Mar 2024:
I agree… abundant clean energy would change the world for ever. Renewable energy sources look attractive in this respect but nuclear fusion (what drives the Sun) is really the only realistic option.

Christie Waddington answered on 15 Mar 2024:
As Nik and Martin have said, hopefully technology will advance enough that we can utilise the renewable energy sources so we can slow down the warming of the planet.
I also think space travel will be important – there are some scientists who have predicted that in 250 million years we will have extreme global warming (could spiral to 70oC). Perhaps we can work out the technology to live on Mars, or venture outside the Milky Way like Star Trek!

Following on from the other comments… since it is easy to agree that abundant clean energy is a great goal, and of the foreseeable options fusion seems the most likely, there is good news for today’s science students: it is forecast that fusion could take in the order of 20-30 years to fully develop therefore today’s students are highly likely to be key to making that happen.

There are many things that could help us. As Martin and Nik point out a source of clean (& cheap) energy is one big issue. But also is all the processes we use to convert raw materials into products. I lot of these are highly wasteful, resulting in pollution. If we can find more efficient methods to make the products we need then that would also make a huge difference. Of course AI could help us find these methods more quickly.
