Question: what is the best thing you have accomplished as a scientist?

So far, I think the best thing I have accomplished is getting a prize for a talk I gave at a conference. Public speaking has always been very scary for me, so it was so cool to know that I had improved that much!

So far, I think publishing my research and presenting my findings at conferences has been my biggest accomplishment. I love writing and talking about my work. But, when I finish my PhD, that will 100% be my biggest accomplishment to date! Although, I feel very proud of everything I’ve accomplished so far because I do not come from a ‘typical’ academic background. When I got my GSCEs, I celebrated! When I got my A-levels, I celebrated! Same for when I graduated my undergraduate degree and when I secured my funded postgraduate researcher position. Be proud every step of the way!

a lot of the work I do involves figuring out the structures of materials (how molecules are arranged within a solid particle). I was very proud when I was able to solve the structure of a material that no one else could do in the past

as a scientist i think there are many steps of acomplishment. and it doesnt always have to be a big thing to be celebrated. i celebrate whenever one of my sample runs is successful because they take alot of work and i take alot of pride in them and giving customers the right results. i also take pride in when some of my work and research goes towards a scientific paper and is published. its nice to see my name out there.

Best thing I have accomplished is knowing that something I have diagnosed has helped a patient to get the right treatment and get better.
This happens every week – which is a great feeling 🙂
For example, last week a person had come to the hospital feeling very ill. The doctors were trying to work out whether the person had a brain tumour or a brain abscess. They took a sample and it was sent to me. I then did a ‘gram’ stain and was able to see bacteria in the sample, using a microscope. This meant that the doctors were able to immediately start treatment for this patient to help them get better.

Being part of a huge team that designed a revolutionary type of new aircraft – that is now operational. It’s great to see it fly overhead and think that I contributed to it.
