Different rocks are made up of mixtures of different chemical substances. These substance have their own colour and shape and all contribute to the overall colour and shape of the rock.

The shape of a rock depends on 3 things: i) its composition (e.g., sandstone, limestone, granite, basalt), ii) the processes that the rock has been through (e.g., sedimentation, metamorphism, erosion) and iii) the amount of time that the rock has existed since it was formed (e.g., some rocks undergo erosion very rapidly and are sharply angular, whereas others are transported in rivers or are eroded on a beach and end up being very smooth and rounded). That’s why!
