Work-wise, I really enjoy chairing HAZOP meetings. HAZOP means a hazard and operability study. It’s a meeting where a group of experts talk through anything and everything that could go wrong in a nuclear facility, and what systems or human actions help to prevent it going wrong. A secretary makes a record of it all, so we can properly analyse each situation afterwards. I chair this kind of meeting, which means I have to lead the discussion, prompt people to make sure they think of everything, and keep the discussion on track.
I really enjoy the interaction with the experts in different subjects, and hearing their ideas. It’s a really effective part of the process for keeping a nuclear facility (like a nuclear power station) safe. Sometimes you find a possible fault situation where the protection is not as good as it could be, so you get a chance to make some improvement. You have the right people there to agree on what they will do about it, like make a change to the design. It feels good afterwards to know that I have helped to make the facility safer, and keep people safe.
In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, sewing, and going out dancing with my friends.
