It helps and I certainly did… But you can start out as a scientist on an apprenticeship pathway. If you like it then you can always consider going to university. Part of being is scientist is learning a lot about science and its foundations so you can build on those foundations.

It helps if you have a formal qualification, but you can get that by either going to university or by doing an apprenticeship. It all depends on what type of scientist you want to be.

it helps to have a university degree but some companies like the one i work for also offer apprentice schemes so you work while you study one day a week at university. so your getting paid and the company is usually also paying for your university fees and at the end of your studies the company usually offer you a job to stay.
its something i wish i had known about when i was making my choices to study at university as i am still paying off my student debt 13yrs after graduation.
